potentialCamgrain is a farmer-owned central storage Co-operative, established in 1983.
Every Camgrain farmer benefits from Camgrain membership through cost saving and a sound investment in a shared asset.

We have been able to see first-hand the progress that Camgrain has made on behalf of its farmer members. They have an excellent reputation across the industry for quality and service which is exemplified by the contracts they have with highly respected food companies.

The recent publication of the Foresight Report by the Government Chief Scientist, highlighted the need to increase global food production whilst delivering a lower environmental impact. This puts great emphasis on the need for farmers to rise to the challenge. Farm controlled cooperatives like Camgrain have a key role to play in delivering these targets on behalf of society by building more sustainable and resilient supply chain relationships that are able to deliver greater financial and environmental efficiencies and reduce supply chain waste.

Camgrain’s strong performance and track record has earned them the confidence of a number of major food processors and retailers.  This has provided Camgrain's farmer members with an effective opportunity to engage in the value added supply chain. Like many others, we believe that farmer collaboration provides the most sustainable future for the food industry.

During the years of its operation one appreciates the advantage Camgrain has given to the neighbourhood as well as individual farmers. My home village, Toft, has 3 farms with individual grain stores each presenting different and difficult problems with transport, dust and noise which are now all gone, mainly thanks to Camgrain. The grain is now cleaned, stored properly in good condition and presented to a high food standard.

We started working with Camgrain two years ago. Now, their drivers have a key to our gate and deliver before anyone else, we have good communications between our two laboratories and know we get good wholesome wheat with no surprises.

Camgrain has a 100% record with no rejections and no claims and they now supply all our low protein wheat ensuring that we don't need to blend or store this grain. Turn round times are improved and there's a constant flow of product saving time all round.

All in all the security of supply provided has established a good foundation for a future working relationship.

David Wright, G R Wright and Sons.

All our customers invest huge amounts of money and equity in their brands and are increasingly aware of food safety and reliability issues of the raw materials they use, particularly in the case of our distilling customers as many are laying down spirit for periods of 10 years or more.

We require 220,000 t of malting barley each year on our site at Bury St Edmunds - the second largest malting in the UK, but with only 10 days storage we needed a strategic partner to hold and deliver stock on a timely basis often to set, 30 minutes time slots on a 'Just in Time' basis.

Camgrain now meets this need and over the period of the relationship we have every confidence in their logistics and quality of store management.

Delivering to forward positions from April through to July – they now provide up to 1,200 t per working day to specification as tested by their own laboratory. This allows our staff to carry out other work on site.

It has also freed up capital that would have been spent on our own storage facilities to develop our own plant at Bury. And, as a result of the localised nature of the arrangement, some of our customers like to be able to visit their farmer suppliers; this provides them with confidence in the provenance of raw material.

Indeed, the committed knowledgeable grower base that Camgrain provides is a key feature that we can promote to our customers, helping to boost their confidence and secure a more reliable and long term supply agreement for UK farming.

Camgrain is an important part of the agricultural economy in the region and has already provided considerable benefit to many farm businesses.

James Paice MP

Camgrain is an integral element in our expanding farming enterprise. Local storage and drying in multiple farm locations is both expensive and less environmentally friendly than using centralised grain store. It also enables the required high food storage standards to be achieved, which is very difficult at a farm location for a viable cost.

Andrew Tetlow, Saffron Walden

Camgrain provides the region’s farmers with a first class facility for storage, grading and marketing of grain.

Robert Sturdy MEP

Having visited Camgrain recently, I am most impressed by their reputation and excellence in securing major contracts with many highly respected national food producers and retailers. These companies are now purchasing their wheat and malting barley from Camgrain.

As well as adding huge value to locally produced cereals, Camgrain will create much needed employment which will in turn help to increase the wealth of the local economy. The environmental footprint of central storage is considerably reduced, with less tractors and trailers travelling on local roads and no more need for inefficient grain dryers on farms.

Meurig Raymond, Deputy President National Farmers Union

With the rapidly changing structure of the cereals and oilseeds sector, the development of centralised storage is a vital step along the competitiveness road. The ever increasing demands of those along the food chain mean that hygiene and food safety of stored crops is paramount and sometimes difficult to achieve in farm stores. The buyers of grain also require exact specification loads into their processing plants. Again this is difficult for an individual farmer to achieve from his own stores. Operators of central stores are properly geared up for this.

I have recently returned from a study tour in the United States where I visited the headquarters of one of the biggest grain traders and food processors in the world. It was quite clear from looking at the logistics of that operation that they relied on central stores to achieve the grain flows needed for their markets. Other member states in the EU are much better served by central storage than we are in the UK allowing them to better react to orders for domestic consumption and export trade. We must not let the UK fall behind international standards for storage and logistics.

Jonathan Tipples, Chairman Home Grown Cereals Authority

Food safety and quality retention, providence and traceability are guaranteed at Camgrain. Buying storage at Camgrain has meant significantly reducing tractor and trailer and lorry movements through the village. Camgrain offers a fantastic solution to farmers. It provides professional storage which enhances the value of their crops allowing them to improve the efficiency of their farms.

Charles Fairey, Linton

The farming industry employs nearly 0.5 million people with another 1.2 million in ancilliary services. By value this is 15% of the UK’s manufacturing output and contributes over £13 billion to the UK’s balance of trade. The food and drink sector purchases two thirds of what UK farmers produce and is therefore essential to the sustainability of British agriculture.

Our direct day to day contact with first hand processors and their customers highlights the current inefficiency of our cereal supply chains compared with our European neighbours. Scale is vital, not just for individual processing sites but for the network as a whole, in being able to supply some of the leading food brands in the UK. From work we have done over the last 2 years we know that we have improved service levels to food processors through eliminating rejections, supplying consistent quality material and increasing the number of loads delivered each day by the same vehicle.

From the farmer’s viewpoint, particularly with the recent wet harvests, we have reduced their energy and labour costs by over 30% compared to farm stores. As the global food market enters a new phase with the requirement for known provenance full traceability and guaranteed supply, these farmer owned central stores now offer a more sustainable solution.  They not only benefit the area in which they serve but also the national economy. Camgrain facilities will provide alignment to the growth strategies of the UK’s leading cereal food brands.

Tim Davies, Group Managing Director, Openfield

Now harvest is over and the autumn cereals drilled, I wanted to take the opportunity to formally thank everyone at Camgrain for helping me out when my drier broke down by allowing me to overdeliver and change the commodities.  This was very much appreciated and helped me get the harvest in without too much delay.

Will Green, George Green (Bozeat) Ltd

Thank you to the team, every time I rang and spoke to one of them they were friendly and efficient, when I was told someone would ring me back with the info I required, it happened quickly.

Charlie Reynolds, Geddington Farms

Thank you to all your team for your excellent performance in getting our grain moved at harvest time. You said you would move the grain as soon as we could harvest it, this you did, excellent, very well done, we look forward to next harvest.

A. C. Keene. Wootton Marsh Farms Ltd

Camgrain Services were very efficient. The lorries were always prompt even when I needed several to keep my combining rolling. Thanks again for making harvest that much easier.

James Tubby, R S Gosling

Thanks to the Camgrain team for their help and efficiency in dealing with transport between our farm and Stratford APC. Rapid intake and turn-around enabled us to keep combining, as lorries were available to haul directly off the combine into store. It all proceeded without a hitch.

John Lampitt, J L Lampitt

Many thanks for all your efforts this year, this Camgrain member is very satisfied with the service you provide. Please pass on my thanks to your staff.

Chris Eglington, S. S. Eglington & Son Ltd

We have recieved a courteous, good humoured and efficient service from your office and also from your hauliers, R. Adams and Sons Ltd. Everything has gone according to plan and our investment in Camgrain storage has resolved the problem of an ageing on-farm system.

A O Colburn, H. A. Colburn & Son (Holdings)

All transport and communications with Camgrain over harvest have been first class. Thank you to all for a stress free harvest

Bryan Thomas, H & R Warriners

The main reason I am drilled up is because with Camgrain I was able to get harvest sorted so quickly and early
